The heart of the city, the area is among the most diverse in all aspects: population, businesses, architecture. This is the place where the richest comes into contact with the poorest, where the haves brush elbows on the sidewalks with the have-nots. The tallest buildings of the city, skyscrapers of 40- and 50 floors, cluster together here to make up the modern skyline that is one of the largest in the world. Less imposing but equally iconic are the cultural niches like Olvera Street, Chinatown and Little Tokyo; here, too, are those the city would rather pretend doesn’t exist, those who find their homes in Skid Row.
