This beachfront neighbourhood is known for canals, beaches and the circus-like atmosphere along the promenade. Having become something of a slum, gentrification projects removed much of the crime and gang violence from East Venice although echoes of it still remain in the older quarters where long standing residents refuse to give up their fiefdoms — even though the shacks have turned into million-dollar properties. The waterfront remains a vibrant place for eccentric artists, performers and entrepreneurs.
